Literature and Young Adults

A multilingual and cross-cultural conference

La littérature et les jeunes adultes

Colloque plurilingue et transculturel

Luxembourg

October 20-21, 2011

University of Luxembourg: Campus Walferdange

Centre national de littérature, Mersch

Aims of the Conference

The organization of this conference has been initiated by the SLLGC (Société luxembourgeoise de littérature générale et comparée) in cooperation with the FLSHASE/ UL (with in particular the support of Foped [Formation pédagogique des enseignants du secondaire] and members of research units LCMI, IPSE) as well as the Centre national de littérature, Luxembourg.

Common interests and diverse perspectives on literature and its link to youth as expressed in different languages and cultures are explored through the contribution of speakers from a variety of backgrounds. Different theoretical references and methodological approaches to literature are seen as dynamic elements for an intercultural exchange.

In recent years, youth literature has gradually developed as a dynamic research area in many academic institutions; usually, the main focus is on children’s literature whereas this conference will concentrate on adolescents and young adults.

Comparative literature often relies on an interdisciplinary approach which entails a rethinking of traditional genres, methodologies and national paradigms. An interest in youth literature as a genre and in cultural representations of youth in fiction is a transnational phenomenon, whose study greatly benefits from a comparative approach. This will also involves a particular focus on the constraints and potential of translation and cultural adaptations.

Moreover, this conference can be seen in the context of multilingualism as a priority for research at the University of Luxembourg. Fictional texts are aesthetic constructions which reflect cultural and linguistic issues; juxtaposition and interdisciplinary approaches allow seeing creation and reception as dialogic and situated processes. A special place is devoted to Luxembourgish viewpoints.

Luxembourg appears to be an excellent venue for a discussion of multicultural and multilingual aspects; the conference addresses scholars, teachers and teacher educators and also hopes to attract an audience from the Greater Region, and possibly beyond.

The expected results are a publication of selected peer-reviewed papers and future cooperation through common projects, as well as projects for Luxembourg teachers’ travail de candidature. Lately, youth literature has met with an increased interest among young teachers and further studies are going to allow a network of cooperation beyond languages and borders.
